HISTORICAL WINDOWS AND PROFILES
Window means “wind-eye” and is the eye of the house through which you can take in the view, and it marks the transition between the outside and the inside. It is a refuge for people, plants and animals and provides light and air. Most old windows are traditionally made from high-quality wood. Elsinore has many examples of original windows that help bring houses to life. The rich details in these important old building elements are based on tradition and craftsmanship – honed over centuries by carpenters to standards that are rarely surpassed today.

RECYCLING, REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE

It makes sense to reuse old historical windows and door elements. Fortunately, in Elsinore, there are lots of original windows, doors and gates that still work perfectly. They just need to be maintained on an ongoing basis, so the wood becomes harder and more robust over time.

In many historical windows, you can often see that the glass itself has become slightly wavy. This causes the light to refract in the glass and also reveals how old the window is.

Over time, countless window and door elements have been discarded in favour of modern types of windows that typically only last for 15–20 years. However, if you maintain and repair old windows using heartwood, linseed oil putty and linseed oil paint, they can last for hundreds of years.

HISTORICAL WINDOW PROFILES

A window consists of a sill, a mullion, a frame and muntins, which can be made in different types of profiles. They help to refract the light in beautiful ways, creating soft transitions between light and shadow.

Modern windows with wide wooden muntins and unseemly profiles do not have these qualities. Once you have experienced classic profiles, you will understand how important the qualities of these old windows and doors are and why they must be preserved.

OLD AND NEW WINDOWS
The putty rebates in old windows make the sills, frames and glass look lighter and the windows more elegant. Modern double-glazed windows, on the other hand, have very wide muntins and glazing beads. As a result, the window is set much deeper and the shadow formation and refraction of light make the window appear clumsy and bombastic.

METAL PROFILES

Numerous buildings in Elsinore have windows with cast iron and wrought iron profiles. You can see them in the churches, at Elsinore Town Hall, in old workshops and a large number of skylights.

ECONOMICAL AND ENERGY-SAVING
Studies have shown that a coupled window or a window with secondary glazing and argon gas-filled glass has an insulating capacity that is up to 30% better than a corresponding double-glazed window. In addition, secondary windows also have optimal noise-reducing properties, which means that this type of window will be a good solution in the long run, both financially and environmentally.
